Job description

The role/job description of the security guard/officer can differ slightly dependant of the location they work at, but the general principles can be applied to most positions. Security guards/officers are there to observe, detect and deter crime and uphold local rules/laws within their place of work. They perform these functions through various means such as manning a reception or patrolling a site. Security guards are normally employed in one of two ways, either by a company which offers out a contracted security service or what is known as 'in-house' which is were the security guard is employed by the site owner where they work. General duties which a security officer can expect to find themselves performing are not limited to but may include:
  • Patrolling a site both internally and externally
  • Key control, both logging keys in and out
  • Access control to a building - either through reception manning or via an intercom
  • Recording incidents and observations in log books, pocket books and report sheets
  • Reporting faults in the building such as leaking pipes
  • Dealing with high risk situations involving aggressive individuals
  • Assisting with major incidents
  • Responding to alarms such as fire or intruder
  • CCTV viewing. Although not present at every site a high proportion of sites which use security staff also have CCTV installed and is monitored by security guards.
How to become a security officer
To start your career as a security officer/guard you need to decide whether or not you will apply for all the security jobs you find or just those for in-house positions (although there are a lot fewer of these). If you are going to work for a security company which provides a contracted security service you will need an SIA security guard licence before you can start working. To view more about licensing and whether you can work whilst waiting for your licence please click here. Once you have undergone your security guard training and you have successfully obtained your licence you can start looking for work as a Security officer/guard. Places where you might want to try is your local Job Centre or you can use the search box to the right. There are some security companies who will provide the right candidate with the security guard training required and fund an SIA licence but these are becoming rare due to the amount of individuals who apply for security jobs who already hold a valid SIA security licence. The average salary for a security officer/guard is anywhere between £16,000 to £22,000 but is purely dependant on location and other employment factors.
