The SIA, Security Industry Authority

The Private Security Industry Act 2001
This legislation was first introduced through Parliament as a tool to regulate the security industry, which up until this point had not enjoyed the best of reputations with the public. It laid a requirement for those working in certain sectors of the industry to apply for what is commonly known as an SIA Licence. The introduction of this legislation also set about the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA), a Government department whose purpose is to control the licensing scheme and manage other implications of the Act.

The SIA
The Security Industry Authority (SIA) control the day to day implementation of the licensing scheme and also decide the relevant training and standard required for those working in licensed roles. You can contact the SIA either on the information below or by the link to to their website at the bottom of the page.

SIA Licence
There are different types of licence such as Door supervisor, Security guard, CCTV operator, Close protection, and Vehicle immobiliser. All are valid for three years from the date of issue. To obtain an SIA licence you must be able to meet the following criteria:
  • Competence - You must have attended and passed a recognised and approved training course for that sector.
  • Address history - You must have an address history which is check-able for the last five years
  • CRB - You must undergo a CRB check on application of your licence. Any relevant crimes committed in the last 2 years and serious crimes in the last 5 years could prevent you from obtaining a licence.
  • Identity - You must be able to provide the relevant ID documents once when you attend an approved training course and again when you apply for your licence.
To view current licence application fee's and find out more information about the scheme please contact the SIA in the first instance.
